In some ways, Fulshear is the new Katy, as Houston’s growth marches ever westward, and as large tracts of developable land in Katy become harder to find. Today, Fulshear has some of the newest, largest and most successful master-planned communities in the Houston region, including Cross Creek Ranch and Fulbrook on Fulshear Creek. The extension of the Westpark Tollway westward to Fulshear is underway and will improve the already good mobility in the area. The appeal of the land is another attraction, as the Katy prairie changes to gently rolling terrain around Fulshear. The town was established in 1824 by Churchill Fulshear, one of Stephen F. Austin’s Old 300 settlers, who purchased parcels of land and set up a colony. In 1888, Fulshear granted passage to the San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway and the town grew to 11 stores, three saloons, a post office, school and hotel. Today, Fulshear is undergoing another kind of boom, as modern-day settlers stake their homestead claims. But the town is still home to friendly families, descendants of the women who took lunches to the railway workers when then stopped in their town.
